Milpitas Reopens Upgraded Pickleball, Tennis Courts

MILPITAS, United States (WHN) – The City of Milpitas held a grand reopening ceremony Saturday for ten new pickleball courts and two resurfaced tennis courts across two city parks. The project addresses a surge in local demand for pickleball and was financed through federal pandemic relief funds, city officials confirmed.

The public facilities are now open. This $1.2 million investment targets the rapidly growing sport. The project was initiated after a 2022 community survey highlighted a significant need for more pickleball infrastructure.

Mayor Carmen Montano attended the ribbon-cutting event. She described the project as a direct response to resident feedback. The upgrades were completed at Hall Memorial Park and Gill Memorial Park.

Project Details and Park Upgrades

At Hall Memorial Park, the city constructed four new, dedicated pickleball courts. An existing tennis court at the location was also fully resurfaced. The upgrades included the installation of new LED lighting for extended play, along with new perimeter fencing, nets, player benches, and windscreens.

Gill Memorial Park saw a more significant conversion. Two existing tennis courts were transformed into six dedicated pickleball courts. A remaining tennis court at Gill Park was also resurfaced. Similar to Hall Park, the Gill Park facility received new LED lighting, fencing, nets, and windscreens to complete the renovation.

The combined effort adds a total of ten dedicated pickleball courts to the city’s public inventory. The two refurbished tennis courts ensure continued access for that sport’s enthusiasts.

Funding and Community Response

The entire $1.2 million cost was covered by funds Milpitas received from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). City officials allocated the federal money to projects that enhance community wellness and outdoor recreation, according to public statements.

Mayor Carmen Montano celebrated the project’s completion. She called it a “great day for Milpitas.”

“This project is a perfect example of what we can accomplish when we listen to our residents and work together,” Montano stated during the ceremony.

The push for the courts began with the 2022 survey. That survey, conducted by the Parks and Recreation Department, identified pickleball as a top recreational priority for residents. Pickleball has been cited as the fastest-growing sport in the United States for three consecutive years, a trend reflected in the local Milpitas demand.

City officials have indicated they are exploring further expansion of sports facilities. A proposal for a new, larger sports complex that would include additional courts is under consideration.
